The birthday surprise

Ben comes to Tina's flat after school.
They are excited.
Tomorrow, there is a surprise birthday party for Miss Blair.
Miss Blair is their English teacher and she is really nice.
Tina and Ben need to make some cupcakes for the party.
First they wash their hands.
Then they get everything ready.
Tina's mum helps them.
Mum, how many eggs do we need?
Three eggs, please.
Oops!
They mix the butter, sugar, eggs and flour in a big bowl.
Then they add a little milk.
We need a lot more flour.
That's right, Ben.
Help! Where is everyone?
Tina's mum puts the cakes in the oven.
The children are thinking about the decorations.
I know! Let's write a message on top of the cupcakes.
We have 26 cakes. Each cake can have one letter on it.
Oh, that's a great idea! Let's write
'HELLO MISS BLAIR ARE YOU THERE?'
No! It's her birthday. How about
'DEAR MISS BLAIR HAPPY BIRTHDAY'?
Oh, OK.
Now the cakes are cool. The children put icing on them.
Then they help Tina's mum tidy the kitchen.
It is very messy!
Look at you! You have icing in your hair!
Well, you have icing on your nose!
Ding dong!
That must be Andy.
Tina's mum goes to answer the door.
Tina and Ben go to Tina's room to play.
Mark is alone in the kitchen …

Andy is home from football practice.
He is very hungry.
He sees the cakes.
Ooh, cupcakes! My favourite.
Tina's dad comes home from work.
He is tired and hungry too.
When he sees the cupcakes, he is very pleased.
He takes one. Then he takes one more.
Mm, these cakes are good!
Tina's mum comes into the kitchen.
The letters are dry now.
She puts the cupcakes in a cake tin.
… 11, 12, 13, 14, …
Suddenly Mark comes into the kitchen.
He is crying.
Tina's mum stops counting.
What's the matter?
Wah! My finger hurts!
Come on, help Mummy. Count with me.
Er … what number is this one? … 19?
Yes, that’s right. 19, 20, 21, 22 …
The next morning, Tina meets Ben at school.
She is holding the cake tin.
They are excited about the surprise!
Let's find Mr Smith and our classmates.
Come on. They're waiting for us in the classroom.
Inside the classroom, everybody is busy.
Tina and Ben take out the cupcakes.
OK, class, we have five minutes.
Let's put the cakes in the right order.
First they spell 'DEAR'.
Then they spell 'MISS BLAIR'.
Next they try to spell 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' … but there is a problem!
Oh no! There's no 'A' for 'HAPPY'!
And we need 'I', 'R' and 'D' for 'BIRTHDAY'!
There is no time! What can they do?
Suddenly Tina has an idea.
We can make a new message with the letters!
But how?
Let's try this. Move the 'A' from 'DEAR'.
Now we have 'HAPPY'!
And move the 'I' from 'MISS'.
And the 'R' and the 'D' from 'DEAR'.
Now we have 'BIRTHDAY'!
Tina and Ben make a new message—'HAPPY BIRTHDAY MS BLAIR'.
Mr Smith helps them.
Good idea! 'Ms' is another way of saying 'Miss' or 'Mrs'.
But now we have two extra cakes. What can we do with them …?
Here comes Miss Blair. She walks into the classroom.
She sees the cakes and the beautiful decorations.
What's this?
Happy birthday, Miss Blair!
All the children sing 'Happy Birthday' to Miss Blair.
Then they have a cupcake, except for Tina and Ben.
They are not very hungry …
Thank you, class. This is a lovely birthday surprise!
