Go, Tina! Go!
By Maureen Bushell
Tina and Ben are at school.
Their class teacher, Mr Smith, writes some words on the blackboard.
Sports trials every day next week after school!
What's a trial, Mr Smith?
I know! It's a test to find good players for a sports team.
That's right, Tina! Everyone can go to the sports trials!
All the students think about their favourite sports.
What team do you want to join?
I don't know, Mr Smith! I don't play any sports.
I just play with my hamster …
Some students begin to laugh!
Mr Smith smiles.
Well then, Tina! You must try them all!
That's a great idea!
On Monday, Tina goes to the basketball trial.
She tries her best, but all the balls fly over her!
Jane joins the team.
I'm too short!
On Tuesday, Tina goes to the tennis trial.
Many of her classmates are at the tennis court.
They know how to start the game.
They can run fast and hit the ball over the net.
But Tina misses the ball again and again!
The coach does not pick Tina. She picks Melissa.
On Wednesday, Tina watches the trials for football and volleyball.
Ben plays football very well.
He can run fast with the ball …
And he can kick it a long way!
Sam is good at volleyball. He can jump very high …
And he can hit the ball very hard!
Ben joins the football team! And Sam joins the volleyball team!
Ben asks Tina about Thursday's trial.
So, Tina, the trial for the running team is tomorrow. Are you going?
I want to go, but I'm still thinking about it.
Melissa and Jane laugh at Tina.
Oh no! Tina still wants to try other sports!
Ha! Ha! Give up, Tina! Just play with your hamster!
Don't listen to them.
Tina and her mum walk home. Tina is sad.
Mum, I want to be good at sports like Ben and Sam, but I'm not.
I want to give up!
Just do your best, Tina!
After dinner, Tina goes to her room and writes in her diary.
It makes her feel better.
Then her mum opens the door.
Are you still upset about the trials, Tina?
No, I'm fine. I'm just not good at sports! That's all.
Tina's mum brings some books.
What are these, Mum?
These are your photos. I want to show you something.
Mum shows Tina some photos.
This is you in the baby swimming pool.
You're happy in the water!
Here you are learning to swim.
This is our summer holiday.
Look! You're good at swimming!
Tina is excited.
Mum, I love swimming! Maybe I can win a swimming race!
Well, Tina, why don't you go to the swimming trial on Friday?
On Thursday, Tina does not go to the running trial.
Mum takes her to the swimming pool to practise.
Well done, Tina. You're amazing! Here's your towel.
Thanks, Mum!
On Friday after school, Tina puts on her swimming costume and goes to the pool.
She is in the first race with Melissa and Jane.
Beep! The girls dive in together.
Go, Tina! Go!
Melissa stops half-way.
Jane keeps going, but she cannot catch Tina.
Tina wins the race! Everyone claps!
Well done, Tina. Welcome to the team!
