Christmas presents
By William Wallis
Five days before Christmas, Ben writes a letter.
Dear Santa Claus,
It's me, Ben! I'm eight years old this year, and I'm a very good boy.
Can I have a train set for Christmas, please?
Love,
Ben
The next morning, Ben shows Dad the letter.
Dad, I want to send this letter to Santa Claus.
OK. I can post it for you.
On Monday evening, Ben and Betty help decorate the Christmas tree.
Dad, I want to put the star on top of the tree!
No, Ben. It's too high. Give it to me. Why don't you help Betty?
On Tuesday, there is a Christmas party at Ben's school.
Ben gets lots of presents from his classmates.
But he does not have any presents for his friends.
Thank you very much for your card, Tina!
Wednesday is Christmas Eve.
Ben and Betty are hanging their stockings on the wall.
Let's leave a mince pie and some milk for Santa Claus.
He's going to be hungry tonight!
After that, Mum, Dad and Betty put presents under the tree.
What a lot of presents, Betty!
Oh no. I don't have any presents for Betty or Mum and Dad.
And tomorrow is Christmas Day!
Ben remembers last year.
Thank you, Betty!
I like your present!
You're so thoughtful.
We don't just get presents at Christmas.
We need to give them too.
Ben goes to his bedroom. He has an idea.
I can try to make some presents!
I need to finish before Santa comes.
But Ben is very tired and he soon falls asleep …
Santa Claus is flying in his sleigh over Ben's house.
He is holding a huge bag full of presents.
Santa stops by the window and climbs into the house.
He puts some big presents under the tree.
Then he takes Betty's stocking.
These little presents are for Betty's stocking.
Next, Santa looks at a long list.
What? Ben is one of the bad children!
He doesn't give presents to other people.
He isn't going to get a present from me!
Ben wakes up. It is Christmas morning.
Is my dream real?
Ben runs to the sitting room. Betty is already there.
Look! I have lots of chocolate coins and nuts.
And I love my toy monkey!
Ben, is there anything in your stocking? It looks empty …
Ben is worried. He takes down his stocking.
It feels heavy.
It's not empty, Betty. Look! Chocolate coins and two oranges.
And a paintbox and toy soldiers!
Mum and Dad come into the sitting room.
Merry Christmas, children! Here are your presents!
Thank you, Mum and Dad. I have some presents for you too.
Betty gives everyone presents.
I like the pen. Thank you, Betty!
Oh, Betty! How kind and thoughtful. It's beautiful!
Betty, I love this hat!
Do you have any presents for us, Ben?
Yes, I have some presents for you too! They're in my bedroom.
What a nice surprise!
What a lovely doll! Thank you, Ben.
It is time to open the last two presents under the tree!
Betty has a doll's house from Santa Claus.
Ben, this big present is for you. Can it be from Santa?
My train set! It's wonderful! Thank you, Santa.
Dear Ben and Betty,
Everyone likes getting Christmas presents, and I hope you like yours too. Merry Christmas!
Love,
Santa Claus
P.S. Thank you for the mince pie and milk.
