The duckling and the chick
Dad takes Tina to a farm.
Look, Tina! There are two new babies on the farm.
Yes, a chick and a duckling!
Right.
The two babies run around and play together.
Look, Dad. The duckling and the chick are good friends!
Yes, they are.
The farmer gives the chick some seeds.
The chick pecks at them with his beak.
The duckling looks at the seeds, but he cannot peck at them like the chick.
Dad, why can't the little duckling peck at seeds like the little chick?
Well, look at their beaks, Tina.
Tina looks at the beaks of the duckling and the chick.
Their beaks are different!
Yes. The chick has a sharp and pointed beak.
It's good for pecking at seeds.
The duckling's beak is round and flat.
It isn't good for pecking at seeds, but it's good for eating plants in the water.
The duckling and the chick play near the pond.
After a while, the duckling jumps into the water and swims away.
The duckling swims really well.
The chick also jumps into the water, but he cannot swim at all.
He gets very wet. And he starts to scream.
Oh no! The chick can't swim!
Peep! Peep! Peep!
Dad saves the chick and puts him in Tina's hands.
He also picks the duckling up and holds him in his hands.
Dad, why can't the little chick swim like the little duckling?
Look at their feet, Tina.
Tina looks at the feet of the duckling and the chick.
Their feet are different.
Yes. The duckling has webbed feet.
They're good for swimming.
The feet of the chick aren't webbed.
They aren't good for swimming.
Suddenly, the duckling and the chick hear a cock crow.
The chick tries to crow, but he cannot.
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
The duckling also tries to crow, but he cannot crow either.
Peep, peep!
Quack, quack!
Dad, why can't the little duckling and the little chick crow like the cock?
Listen!
Tina listens to the cock crow. Then she listens to the duck quack.
Their sounds are different.
The duckling and the chick are both still young.
The little chick will crow like his father when he grows up.
And the little duckling will quack like his father when he grows up.
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Quack, quack!
Several months pass. Tina and Dad visit the farm again.
The duckling is now a fine duck.
The chick is a handsome young cock.
Are they the duckling and the chick?
Yes, Tina. Look! The young duck's feathers are shiny.
He has a bright yellow beak.
The young cock's tail feathers are long.
He has a bright red comb on his head.
The young duck and the young cock are different, but they're still good friends!
They still like to play together.
