Becket said he had no intention of being treated like a criminal. Things rapidly got ugly, fitzUrse ominously declaring that Becket was no longer under the King's peace. Ought Becket to have temporised, to have made an escape while there was still time? "My mind is made up," he told his follower John of Salisbury, "I know exactly what I have to do. Please God, you have chosen well," replied John.
