American Roads

Side of the highway

rain pouring down

and I can't remember where I was headed to now

red stone on the dashboard

and my head in the clouds

I get in my lane

and baby I don't want to get out

you can't take it for granted

when you feel this alive

give a nod to the crosses all along the roadside

and it's hard to imagine

I didn't want to learn how to drive

roll down the window now

just to let in the sky

radio on and my left foot tappin'

sunlight on the the canyon

thin layer of snow

a bullet hole in a motel window

and a burning mobile home

and the wheel in your hand

is the only thing you control

and the worlds just whippin' on past you

like a line of telephone poles

the gasoline in the air I'm breathin'

the things I doubt and the things I believe in

the feeling you have when its more than a feeling

the city I trust and the city I'm leavin'

yeah maybe we just call it even

there's a crack in my windshield

and I'm hoping it holds
