Fragments Of An Island

The evening before at a literary party,

With warm intellectuals who listen to Francoise Hardy,

Asked a poet about his summer, he said up and down

Cleverly transforming adverbs into nouns.

And I thought it probable that there had been more of the last,

but being socially intelligent, I changed the subject fast,

We had a card made of gold, could have bought us anything,

But there was no time before we had to get up and sing.

And I wished I was Andrew Bird just younger,

I wished that this crush would last a little bit longer,

And in spite of the dreadful design,

I remember fragments of an island,

With a fake coastline.

The next few days during shifting weather,

Enjoying the sun or hoping it would get better,

i saw two people kissing at the funeral,

They were not good-looking, but oh so beautiful.

We stole three pens and a poncho and got out of that tent,

To go play some ping-pong with balls from heaven sent,

I wrote letters to you whenever I could find the time,

And they were touching like nothing, but far from sublime.

There's a bridge you have to cross as the rain starts to pour,

You're in the middle of eight thousand people or more

It might seem forced at first but you get into it after a while,
