The White House has confirmed that it's received an 18-page letter from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the first communication from an Iranian president to his U.S. counterpart since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The White House says the letter fails to address U.S. concerns about Iran's nuclear program. It was sent just hours before foreign ministers from the UN Security Council meet in New York to discuss possible action against Iran over its nuclear program. John Bolton, the United States ambassador to the UN, expressed deep skepticism. He said it was typical of Iran that when faced with international pressure, it tried to throw sand in the eyes of the proponents for action. Now that the White House has read the contents, it's just as dismissive. A White House spokesman said that the letter did not discuss matters of noteworthy importance. It made no substantial reference to America's major concerns on Iran's nuclear program. Instead, the official said, the letter was a broad, historic and rambling exposition. When asked whether the U.S. would reply to the letter, the official said no.
