i used to know reality,

i embraced it like a fiend

now i just lay around this old hotel

reading life magazine

i get up in the morning, i shake like a leaf

when i stand on the street corner, i look like a thief

i'm only getting by

by the skin of my teeth

i lost my sense of direction

or maybe i just lost my touch

i used to be my own best friend

but i got to hanging around myself too much

i knew it wouldn't be easy

somebody might've told me how rough it could get

somebody might've let me down easy

with a kind hearted word, well i haven't heard it yet

i read a few books about a few guys

they were losers from the start

they rambled the earth from end to end

but they never did lose their heart

me, i go to bed, i don't sleep too good

i'm dangling by a thread because i uh, well...

i'm hanging by a thread because i sold out cheap

you know i'd like to run away, but i'm in too deep...
