When Charles II acquired these, would he have felt that they added to his stature as a monarch interested in the arts and in sciences? He clearly had an interest in the arts and the sciences. He was founder of the Royal Society after all. I think they would have been regarded primarily as a curiosity in many ways, rather than understood in the way which we understand them. Oh works? So they wouldn't have been regarded as works of art? Yes, well both works of art and scientific studies. Leonardo had a reputation at the time as a bizarre genius in some ways, and it was very obvious that he was taking the subject far beyond what anybody else at the time was doing. These drawings are unique. They are probably the jewel of the entire collection.
